Three days ago, the beloved uncle of my student pa

Three days ago, the beloved uncle of my student passed away. I asked for his name to devote prayers.

Today, on Alcatraz for an annual sunrise gathering with almost 2,000 indigenous people and allies in ceremonial circle, I noticed a young man standing next to me. He donned a hat painted with a red Asian dragon and white lettering.

Incredibly, it spelled out the exact name of my student’s uncle! Turns out the young man is my student’s nephew. The hat had belonged to the late uncle.

The statistical chances of this completely unplanned coincidence occurring are near null. And yet my life is full of such striking serendipities as mythic gifts when embracing mystery.

Uncle was known to be a fun-loving prankster, perhaps even now as a newborn ancestor soul. May you rest in play, humor, and magic dear sir!

P.S. Uncle had a lifelong interest in Eastern culture and martial arts; hence, the sacred sanguine dragon. Also, depicted on the other side of the hat is Quetzalcoatl, the potent feathered serpent deity of sun, wind, wisdom in Aztec spirituality.

MAKER

Every moment beholds
Energy movement unfolds
Flow oh so slow to stop
Still then go on gone in a
Flash flown as one once
In a million crashes is
Smashed to ashes of
Former diamonds we
Thought were forever
Fought and died for
As blood dyes our eyes
Like black ink on blank
Scrolls scribbled with
Eloquence few drink
To quench lives on the
Brink of breaking until
Souls shaken awake
Will untie lies to unite
Under what belies our
Stories both gory and
Glorious instead see now
How all that matters is
Shattering apart while
Battered upon battles
Not worth sacrificing
The sacred nor defacing
Those graced by bountiful
Beautiful flaws who were
Awed within flames which
Burned away shame they

Too small to make moves
